The Power of a Strong Aura
How I Discovered the Power of the Aura
I had a client who was seeing me for a series of five energy sessions. We were making great progress, each session building on the last, clearing old stuck energy, and watching things shift positively in their life. This is the part I love about Energy Healing - the subtle changes that begin to shift people out of old repeated habits - anyway, between the third and fourth week’s sessions, I took off to the mountains to sleep on the ground in nature. Aka - camping with the fam!
On my second night out there, I woke up in a panic! No there wasn’t a bear snuffling around, although my Triple Warmer response was going off like there was! My heart was racing, and I had an overwhelming sense of dread. As I’m prone to do, I went worst case - Am I having a heart attack? How would I get an ambulance out here? What if my kids woke to find me dead next to them? Yes. I go all the way with catastrophizing. Looking back now I can see it was a classic panic attack. Thankfully, I somehow remembered my energy tools - hand up to my forehead to simply hold the main Neurovascular’s. This helps bring blood back to your forebrain so that you can think more clearly. I managed to calm myself down and eventually fall back asleep. The next morning, the panic was gone, but I had extreme pain in my neck - I couldn’t turn my head to the left without shooting pain down my back. I figured I must’ve slept funny after the stressful night. What was up with me? And I know you’re asking, what does this have to do with Aura’s?
Fast forward to my client’s fourth session. As we were catching up, it was revealed to me that on that very same weekend, they had ended up in the hospital thinking they were having a heart attack (thankfully, it wasn’t). On top of that, they had been dealing with a sore neck all week - just like me.
Aha! Something clicked. Unfortunately, this wasn’t the first time I had felt symptoms that mirrored what a client was experiencing. In fact, this was the fourth time and the catalyst for finding a solution to why I kept picking up client issues in my own body before a session. Enter… the Aura.
What Is the Aura?
The aura is your energetic boundary, your personal force field. It acts like a two-way antenna: it draws energy in from the environment to greet you and sends your energy out into the world to let other’s know your energy system. You know before a word has been spoken whether someone’s presence makes you feel energized or drained.
When you feel joyful, confident, and alive, your aura can fill an entire room. When you're sad or withdrawn, your aura pulls in close, forming a kind of energetic shell that separates you from others. The aura is why when you meet new people, you can instantly know when someone isn’t your type of person and other people will feel like old friends. Some auras feel inviting and warm, others push people away like an electric fence.
The aura constantly shifts and adapts based on the environment you’re in, as well as the circumstances or stories you’ve come from. Ideally, it filters harmful emotional, physical, and psychic energies from your surroundings. But sometimes, it let’s things in, allows for someone else’s energy to infiltrate or simply wrap around you too tightly, like a Grandma going in for a tight squeeze. Loving, but not optimal!
So What Happened to Me?
When I shared this strange experience with one of my teachers, he told me I was becoming more attuned to subtle energy - a good thing! But that I should learn to consciously manage when I connect with others’ energy. I was advised to only “open” my energy field intentionally to my clients during sessions.
Easier said than done.
Another mentor suggested tightening my Celtic Weave, a protective part of the energy field but it was something I was already doing as part of my Daily Energy Routine. It wasn’t helping. WTF?!
Eventually, I energy tested my aura and discovered it was chronically expanded—extending far beyond my body, for days at a time. That meant I was literally reaching out energetically and “touching” people before I even saw them. No wonder I was picking up on client issues without meaning to! Plus probably a lot of other unwanted energies that I had no intention of feeling.
The Technique That Changed Everything: The Butterfly Exercise
The exercise that helped me literally rein in my energy and call my aura back is what Donna Eden calls the Butterfly Exercise. It’s simple, effective, and best of all … quick! It made a huge difference for me.
Now, some of my empath friends like keeping their aura wide open and out there. That’s totally valid and nothing wrong with it! But if you're someone who…
Goes home from work with headaches,
Feels overwhelmed in crowds or malls,
Works in healthcare, education, or service,
Or know that you absorb the emotions of those around you,
…this exercise could be a game-changer.
(Video tutorial below! Be gentle on me -seriously, I look serious in this video because energy work is intense, ok? 😅)
What about when the Aura is in too close?
Just as an expanded aura can be problematic, a collapsed aura can cause its own issues. When the aura pulls in too tightly, a person might seem invisible or disconnected. They may feel hopeless, fatigued, or vulnerable - especially after illness or trauma.
Sometimes the aura collapses intentionally, to focus healing energy inward after surgery or during recovery. Though it may have adapted to protect you, if the aura stays chronically collapsed, it can trap your energy and disconnect you from the world. Over time this pattern can become stuck - undermining your health and well-being. And if it stays collapsed, it can leave the person feeling fragile, emotionally raw, or spiritually disconnected.
Enter the Reverse Butterfly Exercise. Equally as simple, it involves just fluffing your aura out from your body so that you can reconnect with the world around you.
If you're someone who…
Feels invisible, drained, or disconnected in social settings,
Struggles to assert yourself or be seen and heard,
Is recovering from illness, trauma, or emotional burnout,
Or often feels overwhelmed, hopeless, or energetically "shut down,"
…your aura may be collapsed. Gently expanding it could help you feel more present, empowered, and alive.
